Hello Pawz Parents!
At a family gathering the other day I was reminded that not all pawz belong to dogs, wait, WHAT???
Yes, cats are fur babies too.
So, I got my brain to working and decided that I needed to come up with a recipe for cat treats. Sounds easy for someone like me that loves to cook and can be quite creative in the kitchen, wrong!
I pondered just making some substitutions but dealing with the added moisture of the fish was the biggest problem. The biggest problem is storage and how long they will last. Storage… sealed container in the refrigerator or the freezer. They should be fine in the fridge for several weeks; in the freezer for up to 3 months. Okay, that’s out of my hair! Now just what to combine for these kitty treats???
I came up with a couple of basic recipes and I hope your purring fur baby likes them.
Only 3 Ingredients:
Preheat oven to 350°
Ingredients:
2 5-ounce cans of tuna in oil (undrained)
1 egg (beaten)
2 cups whole wheat flour
Directions:
Pulse 10 ounces of undrained, canned tuna in a food processor to chop as finely as possible.
In a stand mixer, combine the tuna, egg (beaten), and 2 cups whole wheat flour until dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add up to 1/3 cup water just a little at a time. If it is too wet or sticky, add a bit more flour. The dough should be tacky but not sticky.
Roll out the dough on a floured surface until about 1/4-inch thick. Use a small cookie cutter or cut into strips and cut squares or triangles to create your treats.
Place the treats on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 350° for about 20 minutes. When they’re slightly browned and crunchy, they’re done.
Allow to cool before serving.
Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Now that was easy! Hope your kitty likes them! I have one more recipe to share with you!
Salmon and Pumpkin Bites
Ingredients:
1 1/4 cups whole wheat flour (divided)
5 ounces boneless skinless salmon (can or pouch) drained
1 large egg
1/4 cup pumpkin puree
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Break the salmon up with a fork or a food processor.
Combine 1 cup of flour, salmon, egg, and pumpkin puree in bowl. Use spoon or electric mixer to combine into a dough.
Place the dough onto the parchment lined baking sheet, sprinkle with some additional oat flour and pat down to about 1/4 inch thick. Poke all over with a fork. (This will help release moisture while baking.)
Bake for 15 minutes.
Remove from oven and use pizza or pastry cutter to cut into small bits. Spread the bits out and bake for another 15 - 20 minutes or until firm. Let cool completely.
Place in an air-tight container and store in refrigerator for 2 weeks or freeze for about 3 months
